India is self-sufficient in a variety of agro products. In the edible oils vertical, the country is a net importer. For the year Oil Year 2015 (Nov-Oct), India accounted for 12-14% of world edible oil imports, according to a research report published by CARE Ratings. Analysis of imports shows that in terms of volumes, Crude Edible Oil contributes about 89% and refined oil contributes about 11% of the total import during OY FY15.

More than 10% of the world’s edible oil is consumed in India, and only 4-6% is produced in India. The demand-supply gap is becoming wider mainly due to limited availability of oil seeds, shifting of acreage to other crops and increase in demand for edible oil.

Domestic Edible Oil Manufacturers produce Bulk Cooking Oil from a variety of oil seeds grown across the country. Palm oil imports constitute nearly 75 per cent of the total edible oil imports. Palm is generally the cheapest commodity vegetable oil and also the cheapest oil to produce and refine globally. Palm Oil Suppliers in India handled a countrywide production of 1.7 lakh tonnes for 2014-15.

Olive Oil, known for its health benefits, is used as a cooking medium for frying or as a salad dressing. It has the highest content of monounsaturated fats (MUF), which reduces bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides, and contains among the lowest amounts of other harmful fats.
