THE VERSATILE COCONUT

 At every stage of its existence, every part of the coconut tree and fruit yield multiple benefits. A familiar sight in the tropics and sub tropics, it forms part of the diet of many, and also finds application in cooking and cosmetics. While tender, its water quenches thirst, when mature its “flesh” is edible, and the dried coconut kernel (copra) can be pressed to extract Coconut Oil. The hard shell can be used as fuel, its fibrous husk can be converted to coir and coconut milk can be used in various food preparations. The dried kernel can also be converted to desiccated coconut powder. Coconuts grown in organic farms across India produce Organic Coconut Oil, which is rich in Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA).

 Coconut flower sap (Neera), a non-alcoholic drink, is a rich source of sugar, minerals and vitamins. In many parts of India, coconuts have religious significance and form part of rituals.

Asia accounts for a significant share of the world’s coconut production. Sri Lanka is known for “King” coconuts, which are indigenous to the island. These are orange colored, are grown without use of fertilizers, and have high water content.

India currently ranks third in the world for coconut production. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, India’s coconut production is farmed over an area of 19.8 lakh hectares, The contribution of coconut in the country's GDP is about Rs. 20,000 crore. Coconut crop provides livelihood for over one crore people in India.
